Amyl & The Sniffers – The Academy

‘If someone falls down help them up. Don’t touch anyone that doesn’t want to be touched.’

Words of wisdom from vocalist Amy Taylor are the first we hear from her. As you enter the venue, posters adorn the walls warning attendees that this show will have zero tolerance for any unwanted or aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated.

This is proper punk music the way it should be. Progressive, accessible and inclusive.

The venue is sold out tonight, and even early in the set the heat of the crowd is impossible to avoid. All the usual topics that any politically active band talk about are brought up, but rather than just the normal ‘fuck Trump’ sentiment, Taylor hilariously describes him as more hurtful than a Brazilian wax.

In a set that last only a little over an hour, the band manage to pump through a solid set list, the majority of which is from their recent release ‘Cartoon Darkness.’ For an album released just over 2 weeks ago, the volume of the crowd is magnificent. While older songs such as ‘Some Mutts’ and ‘GFY’ still receive the best reception, it’s clear they’ve got a loyal fan base.

The venue seems too small to contain this group. Although it’s not often they tour the UK, there’s no question that they could upgrade to an arena tour on their next visit. And with their positive punk messages and no nonsense calling out of governments and authority, their ranks rising can only be seen as a good thing.
