Not only are we celebrating the release of Snow Patrol’s first album in 6 years, it’s also the 21st anniversary year of their breakthrough album ‘Eyes Open.’ Boy, do i feel old?
The show starts with some throwbacks to their earlier works before launching into new tracks. The new songs are warmly received, but it’s the classics that feature deafening sing-a-longs from the crowd. ‘Run’ and ‘Open Your Eyes’ both come close to drowning out the sound of the band – and in some cases, remember the lyrics better too!
The entire performance could be summed up as ‘mesmerising.’ The anthemic guitar solos, the screaming lyrics. This band was made to perform to arenas, and even after a lengthy break from performances, their return to live shows feels natural.
From their entrance onwards, you feel the excitement and a genuine happiness to be there. Gary Lightbody almost looks shocked that anyone has turned up, a short 27 years since their first release. We all cheer for guitarist and pianist Johnny McDaid as it’s revealed that just days ago, he underwent surgery after trapping his hand in a train door and has performed 4 show since them in spite of this. As though I need another reason to feel guilty for calling in sick to work.
They almost appear unassuming as they stand on the modest stage. No fireworks, elaborate costume changes or other gimmicks. Just a good, honest, career-spanning set. Fittingly, their set finishes with the ‘Just Say Yes;’ the single from their greatest hits album. An appropriate conclusion to such a concert.
