Some people might know Juanita Stein as lead singer of 00s indie sensation Howling Bells. A smaller number of particularly hardcore fans may know her as one quarter of Waikiki. But tonight it’s just her, and she’s here to prove that’s all we need.
The chatter of the crowd is silenced by the opening notes of her latest album title track, ‘The Weightless Hour.’ And aside from some laughter at lighthearted comments about breaking covid lockdown restrictions and pear cider, the stunned silence is largely maintained for the whole set.
Spanning her trio of albums, she draws her set to a close with a touching story of her late father’s music followed by a satirical take on the state that is (and had been for many years) America.
Apparently, Birmingham is the first date of the tour so far to plead for the encore they had so readily prepared. Not bad for a Monday night! So if you see Juanita Stein in the future, remember to do the same. As my Mom always says, if you don’t ask, you don’t get!
