It’s a good time to be a Wet Leg fan. Not only are they popping up at an exhaustive list of festivals this summer (Glastonbury, TRNSMT and Down The Rabbit Hole to name just a few), they have a brand-spanking-new album out in July! And on top of that, but they’re off on the road a quick UK tour of venues they’re sure to soon outgrow.
The tour starts tonight in Birmingham, where the bank holiday weekend has come early the o2 Academy. The set kicks off with the lead single from their upcoming album, ‘catch these fists,’ spring-boarding the 5-piece into a raucous performance.
Appetites are satisfied with the favourite of the debut self-titled being played, but we’re also given a taste of what is to come from their new album, ‘moisturizer.’ The band’s patented brand of indie angst is still shines through the music, but the performance stays light-hearted and fun. Definitley not a bunch to take themselves too seriously, and the joy is certainly infectious!
Breakthrough single ‘Chaise Longue’ comes towards the end of the set, the walls almost trembling under the sheer noise of the chanting crowd. Vocalist Rhian Teasdale screams into a pink phone set beside her on the otherwise minimalist stage (a joyful and whimsical touch) and the short set is brought to a close after an hour.
But that’s not to say it feels too quick. The hits are covered and we’re not left feeling like anything major has been missed out. If this is a preview for their festival sets, then the summer audiences are in for a treat. It’s a good time to be a Wet Leg fan.
