Andrew Cushin – Hare & Hounds

This past summer, music has been dominated largely by one thing in the UK.

Oasis.

Their reunion has brought a sense of joyous nostalgia far and wide, and with it the appetite for a sound influenced by their greatest hits.

Enter Andrew Cushin.

With his second full-length album released earlier this yet, he has achieved a lot in the 5 years since his first single. Collaborating with Noel Gallagher, signing to Pete Doherty’s record label and opening for huge artists including Louis Tomlinson. But embarking on his own UK tour shows he doesn’t need big names to prove his worth as a singer-songwriter.

The main room of Hare & Hounds in close to capacity by the end of the support acts – almost too packed for Andrew and his band to reach the steps to the stage. Starting with the title track from the new album, ‘Love Is For Everyone,’ the charisma and draw of his performance is made clear within minutes of his the first song. His energy and song-writing combine to form a perfect antidote to the end of summer blues.

His set has practically everything you’d hope for from a stadium gig – roaring anthems (Wor Flags), songs to sing while you throw your arms round your friend’s shoulders (It’s Coming Round Again) and songs that make you try to dance (Alright!)

In between songs, his confident Geordie wit shines through his banter with the crowds. Despite refusing a marriage proposal, he’s more than comfortable having a laugh on stage, insulting nearly any football team and inciting sing-along chants.

By the end of the encore, a smile is cemented on every face in the venue. It may not be a Friday night, but Andrew Cushin’s performance leaves an optimistic feeling in the air. It’s tricky to decide what would be best – gatekeeping his music to keep him performing in small, intimate venues? Or shout about him and hope to one day catch him headlining an arena? Either way, I know I’ll be snatching up tickets when he next announces a tour!
