Vukovi – XOYO

VUKOVI are proof that bands aren’t necessarily a numbers game (take that, Slipknot!) As a 2-piece for several years now, their Birmingham tour show is solid evidence that they are no less mighty…

XOYO in Digbeth may not be filled with cake, screaming children and balloons, but tonight we are commemorating a very special 1st birthday. One year since the release of the latest album MY GOD HAS GOT A GUN. Add that anniversary to the fact that it’s VUKOVI’s first Birmingham show in over 3 years (rude) and you’ve got one hell of a reason to celebrate.

Setting the tone for the night, we kick things off with MGHGAG favourites such as THIS IS MY LIFE AND MY TRAUMA, GUNGHO and MISTY ECSTACY. But there’s no risk of any of the previous albums or EPs feeling left out of the occassion – the set list makes sure to include hits from as far back as 2016.

Guitarist Hamish Reilly works hard to match the energy of the crowd, hardly able to keep still long enough for a guitar change. And vocalist Janine Shilstone keeps spirits high with a number of slightly chaotic links between songs, most notably losing a fans phone when she tried to lob it back to them in the crowd (they found it eventually)…

The venue hasn’t sold out tonight, but it doesn’t dishearten those that have shown up. From 2023 single CREEP HEAT to NULA release C.L.A.U.D.I.A, mosh pits open and choruses are screamed back at volume. “I’m going to do a slow song now then we’ll do the bangers,’ Shilstone promises as things calm down for Colour Me In.

The night ends with more of a focus on VUKOVI’s earlier material. From I EXIST and Run/Hide the atmosphere keeps growing, peaking at the ultimate closing track La Di Da. Birmingham are obviously pleased to have them back, so let’s hope VUKOVI don’t leave it this long next time!
